Who, What , When with Brent Livermore OAM

Former Australian Hockey player, Olympic gold medallist, Head coach at NSW Institute of Sport, investment consultant, 2015 Clarence Valley Ambassador.

Grafton-born Brent Livermore was firmly in the sights of talent scouts long before he was selected to play field hockey for Australia in 1997. Seven years later he was captain of the Kookaburras, leading his team to Olympic gold at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

These days, the married father-of-two spreads his time between his family, work as a hockey coach and the beach. We caught up with the talented midfielder to find out what makes him tick.

Who… do you look up to?

My idols are Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. I always looked to Jordan in particular for his inspiration, motivation and ability to make things happen through his greatness.

What… might people not know about you?

I chopped off the end of one of my fingers with a circular saw whilst doing my Year 12 woodwork HSC assessment.

When… do you find time to unwind?

I very rarely switch off, but I have learnt to listen to my body, mind and family to gauge when I need to take a break. Luckily, my passions are included in the everyday activities I enjoy, which allows me to unwind quite easily. Being an active and adventurous person, I find a lot of things help me to refresh and switch off.

Where… is your favourite place?

Any beach where there is family, friends and adventures to be had.

Why… are you so passionate about hockey?

I love that you are continuously learning and overcoming challenges, as well as the capacity you have to have to push yourself in playing and coaching in order to be successful.

How… do you start each day?

Early – usually with a sunrise. Then I train with some form of cardio, maybe a run, cycle or a gym session, followed by yoga or relaxation techniques. It gives me time to reflect and reset and focusing on the breath is important for that.
