Welcome to Ulmarra

Ulmarra, proudly Yaegl Country.

Quite possibly, the best little town in Australia

Quaint, quiet and quirky, that’s the Ulmarra we know and love. Retaining the charm of the historic port town it once was, and inviting you to enjoy the quiet ambiance of this river hamlet.

A short 15-minute drive north from Grafton, and part of Tourist Drive 22, Ulmarra is a perfect pit stop for those travelling through the region, and an even nicer home-away-from-home where you can rest your head for a day or two.

On the banks of the Clarence River, with a deep and long history with the water, Ulmarra was once a thriving trading village. Home to some of the first commercial operations of the region, it had a busy wharf and even busier production line of fresh produce, cattle trading and the Clarences’ first sugar mill back in the 1860’s.

The Ulmarra Heritage Trail will take you on a journey through town and through time. Admire the mid-late Victorian and early Edwardian architecture and imagine life on horseback as you stroll through Coldstream and onto River Street. Park your horse outside Ulmarra Hotel for a top notch lunch with a 5 star view.

If you love life on the water, Clarence Cruising is the mariners’ guide to all things Clarence River. Navigate your way from Grafton through to Iluka if you want to, or simply stop at Ulmarra Pontoon for some lunch and a look around town.

Look out for the car ferry that operates between Ulmarra and Southgate daily. A popular route to discover the ferries for yourself (Ulmarra and Lawrence, yes there are two!) is this road trip idea, we aptly named One Ferry Two. We are so imaginative!

Back on land, you would be forgiven for thinking you can quickly gander in the array of eclectic shops on the main street, but this is rarely the case. The Coldstream Art Gallery, second-hand book store and the petite retail outlets that dot the street entice you in and keep you there. Figuratively speaking not physically obviously!

Let the kids burn off steam in Bailey Park. Equipped with a new playground and water play area, the little ones will find this the perfect place to cool off or warm up, depending on the season.

If you happen to be here through the last week of October, not only will you experience Jacaranda Season but you may just catch the Clarence Valley Country Muster, so pack your dancing shoes.

For such a quaint little town, Ulmarra certainly packs a good punch, and it has been described by Andrea Black as “The best little town in Australia” in Escape Magazine.

Don’t just take our word for it though, you have to feel, to believe.
